Description

Florence Belt Makers' Guild (Arte dei Correggiai) Flag

White with red wavy bars: the banner of the Arte dei Correggiai

This banner is a white field with a row of seven red wavy vertical bars along the lower half, drawn with a dark hand-inked outline. A thin red and white striped edge runs along the top, the fly and the bottom.

The guild of belts, saddles and shields

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Correggiai, also called of the Correggiai, Tavolacciai and Scudai, was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. It had three main groups, belt makers, saddlers and shield makers, each electing its own consul. In 1305 the shield makers obtained the right to elect a gonfaloniere, and in 1379 the brass workers, who made buckles and fittings, were added.

The wavy bars

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as a shield divided in two, the lower part silver with wavy red bars («pali ondati di rosso»). This banner shows seven wavy bars; the blazon quoted on the page specifies three.

Famous saddlers

The saddlers of Florence were so well known that in 1328 the Duke Charles of Calabria ordered from them the equipment for the knights of his retinue. The guild's first seat was the church of Sant'Andrea in Mercato Vecchio, and later it had its own house in via Lambertesca, where the doorway with the arms still stands.

The end of the guild

In 1534 Duke Alessandro de' Medici reformed the statutes. The Università dei Maestri di Cuoiame gathered the Calzolai, Galigai and Correggiai, with the Holy Trinity as protector. In 1770 Peter Leopold suppressed all the guilds and created the Chamber of Commerce.
