Description

Florence Armourers' and Swordsmiths' Guild (Arte dei Corazzai e Spadai) Flag

A sword and a cuirass on white: the banner of the Arte dei Corazzai e Spadai

This banner is a white field with a blue-steel sword wrapped in a red strap and, beside it, a blue-steel cuirass.

Armourers and swordsmiths

According to Italian Wikipedia, the Arte dei Corazzai e Spadai was one of the Arti Minori of Florence. The first statute of the armourers dates from 1321 and mentions about thirty workshops in the corso degli Adimari, today the last stretch of via Calzaiuoli, while the swordsmiths were on the other side of Piazza del Duomo, in what was once called via Nuova degli Spadai (today via Martelli). The two trades formed one guild only in 1410.

The arms

Italian Wikipedia gives the guild's arms as «d'argento alla spada di ferro accompagnata da una correggia di rosso e alla corazza al naturale (o di rosso)»: a silver field with an iron sword accompanied by a red strap, and a cuirass in natural colour or red. The banner shows the sword with the red strap and the cuirass.

Rules and patron

The city authorities kept a tight watch on the armourers: the thickness of the steel was fixed by law, and the inside of the plates had to be lined with the best leather for the wearer's comfort. The guild chose Saint George as its patron, and his statue was commissioned from the young Donatello for the tabernacle at Orsanmichele (1415-1417).

The end of the guild

In 1534 the guild joined the Università dei Fabbricanti, together with the blacksmiths, the lock-makers and the stone and wood masters. Pietro Leopoldo suppressed all the guilds in 1770.
