Description

Drenthe Flag

White, with red bands, a black tower and six red stars: the flag of Drenthe

This flag is white, crossed by two broad red bands, one near the top and one near the bottom. In the middle, between the bands, stands a black castle tower, with three red five-pointed stars on each side of it.

What the official description says

Gedeputeerde Staten of Drenthe adopted the flag on 19 February 1947 (Decision 72 of 1947). The article on the flag says that this made Drenthe the first Dutch province with an official provincial flag. The description gives a white field with two red bands, each one ninth of the height of the flag, placed two ninths from the top and from the bottom edge. The design is by the heraldist Gerlof Auke Bontekoe, mayor of Sleen from 1927 to 1938.

Six stars and a tower

The six stars stand for the six dingspelen, the old judicial districts of Drenthe: Zuidenveld, Oostermoer, Noordenveld, Rolde, Beilen and Dieverderdingspel. The tower refers to the castle of Coevorden, from which the officers of the Bishop of Utrecht enforced the law. The black colour of the tower was chosen for aesthetic reasons.

White and red

White and red are the traditional Saxon colours and those of the Archbishopric of Utrecht, which governed Drenthe while it belonged to the Oversticht. The flag was first shown on 12 March 1947 at the founding meeting of the Drents Genootschap in Assen.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Drenthe, from Assen, Emmen, Hoogeveen or Meppel, or with roots in the province; for those who live far away and carry it with them; for schools, clubs, associations and local businesses; for walkers and cyclists who love the Drenthe landscape. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
