Description

City of Verona Flag

Blue with the golden cross: the Verona flag

The Verona flag is blue, crossed by a golden yellow cross running to the edges. It reproduces the city's coat of arms, and the Statute of the Comune gives it a solemn name: the standard of Verona, symbol of communal freedom. Anyone who passes under the city's old gates sees it flying, blue and gold.

The symbol of communal freedom

Verona's Statute devotes a whole article to the standard: the Comune has as its own distinctive sign the standard with the golden cross on a blue field, symbol of communal freedom, and flies it together with the gonfalone of the Veneto Region and the tricolour, symbol of national unity. It is the city's official flag, written into its founding charter.

The cross of the guilds

The golden cross and the blue colour are already found on the gonfalone of the old community of Veronese craftsmen. When in 1259 the guilds rose to power, paving the way for the lordship of the Scaligeri, those colours became the symbols of the whole city, and they still are today. The coat of arms was officially recognised on 23 December 1938, the gonfalone on 10 June 1939.

From the Comune to the Scaligeri

Verona was a Roman colony and later the residence of the Lombard king Alboin. From the cooperation of nobles and wealthy merchants the Comune was born, which in 1164 created the League of the Veronese March and in 1167 joined the Lombard League. On the death of Ezzelino, in 1259, power passed to the guilds, with Mastino della Scala as captain of the people; under Cangrande the Scaliger lordship conquered Vicenza, Padua and Treviso.

With Venice and Saint Zeno

In 1405 Verona gave itself to Venice, whose long rule lasted until 1796. The city's patron is Saint Zeno, whom Verona celebrates every year on 12 April. For that day, as for every city celebration, the blue and gold standard is the flag to fly.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Verona or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Venetian associations around the world, for the Comune, schools and the university, for the feast of Saint Zeno and the city's events, for fans of Hellas Verona, for a wine bar, a restaurant or a shop selling Veronese products, for anyone who has visited Juliet's city and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
