Description

City of Tarquinia Flag

Red, with a white cross and a fruiting tree: the flag of Tarquinia

This flag is a plain red field. In the centre stands a red shield with a silver cross, on which grows an uprooted cornel tree with red fruit. A gold city mural crown sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak tied with a light blue ribbon frames it.

The cornel tree on the cross

Italian Wikipedia gives the arms as «Di rosso, alla croce piana d'argento, caricata in palo e in fascia di un corniolo al naturale, sradicato, fogliato e fruttifero di rosso»: a red shield with a plain silver cross carrying a cornel tree, uprooted, in leaf and bearing red fruit, in its natural colours. Arms and gonfalone were recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 4 February 1933, and the gonfalone is a red cloth.

A city

The Statute of the City of Tarquinia says the Comune signs itself «Città di Tarquinia», and that the mural crown is the one provided for cities, whose title was granted to the Comune by decree of the President of the Republic. The statute gives the outer ornaments as an oak branch and an olive branch tied in a crown, held by a ribbon, with the mural crown above.

Tarchna of the Etruscans

Italian Wikipedia says that ancient Tarquinia, in Etruscan Tarch(u)na, stood on the plateau of La Civita, separated from today's town by the plateau of the Monterozzi, where the great necropolis stands, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2004. It was one of the main cities of the Etruscan dodecapolis, and about four hundred painted tombs have been recorded on the Monterozzi.

From Corneto to Tarquinia

The town was called Corneto until 1872, and then Corneto Tarquinia until 1922. It is a comune in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. Its patron is the Madonna of Valverde, celebrated on 8 May.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Tarquinia or from the province of Viterbo, for those who live far away and carry their place with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
