City of Salerno Flag

Blue, gold and red: the Salerno flag

The Salerno flag has a blue band at the hoist and, beside it, six vertical stripes alternating golden yellow and red. They are the colours of the city's coat of arms and gonfalone: the blue of the field on which Saint Matthew appears, and the gold and red that the people of Salerno regard as the traditional colours of their city.

Saint Matthew, protector of the city

In the coat of arms and on the gonfalone, on a blue field, is the figure of the apostle Matthew. According to tradition, Salerno put him in its coat of arms around 1544, when a storm destroyed the fleet of the pirate Khair-ed-Din as it was about to attack the city and the people gave the credit to their patron. The seals of 1574 are the first documents linking the Comune to a coat of arms.

Gold and red, colours defended

Gold and red are Salerno's traditional colours, and the Comune defended them: in 1940 the Heraldic Council proposed changes, but the city insisted on keeping them. The decree of 23 June 1949 describes the gonfalone as a cloth divided horizontally blue and red: on the blue Saint Matthew, on the red three gold bars and the initials S.P.Q.S. in gold. Today's coat of arms is the redrawn one approved by the City Council in December 2011.

Hippocratica Civitas

In 1996 the coat of arms gained the words «Hippocratica Civitas», in honour of the Salerno Medical School. As early as the eleventh century, under Prince Guaimar V, Salerno's medical school was famous, and the city held a kind of political primacy over the states of southern Italy.

From Roman colony to capital

Salernum was founded by the Romans in 197 BC. In 849, when the Lombard duchy of Benevento split, Salerno became the capital of an independent principality. Robert Guiscard, after the siege of 1076, made it the capital of his duchy, and in those years the cathedral was built, still the city's main monument today. In 1550, after centuries of feudal lords, Salerno was finally able to buy its freedom.

Who chooses it
