Description

City of Naples Flag

The gold and red shield: the Naples flag with the coat of arms

This Naples flag is a white field with the city's coat of arms in the centre: a shield divided in half, gold above and red below, topped by a turreted crown. It is the coat of arms of Naples carried on a flag, so that it can be seen from afar and needs no words.

Divided gold and red

The Statute of the City of Naples describes it like this: a Samnite shield divided horizontally gold and red, topped by a city's turreted crown. «Troncato» means cut by a horizontal line: gold above, red below. The Statute adds that the Neapolitan coat of arms and civic gonfalone are «the historic ones»: not a new design, but the signs the city has carried for centuries. The coat of arms was recognised by decree on 13 January 1941.

Colours centuries old

The yellow and red of Naples have a very long history. Flag scholars recall a yellow and red flag already in a fourteenth-century illuminated codex, the «Regia Carmina», dated to around 1330, and trace those colours back to the Angevin era, when Naples was the capital of the Kingdom.

From coat of arms to gonfalone

The city's gonfalone takes up the same design: it too is divided gold and red, with the civic coat of arms in the centre and the words «Comune di Napoli» in gold. Pinned to the gonfalone is the gold medal for military valour, awarded on 10 September 1944 for the popular uprising against the German armed forces, the Four Days of Naples. The flag with the coat of arms carries the same image out of the palaces, on a white field that makes the gold and red stand out.

A flag for ceremonies

Alongside the simple yellow and red bicolour, the version with the shield and crown is the one chosen when you want to show the coat of arms: in a hall, behind an official table, in a procession, at a neighbourhood festival or on the front of a place that wants to say where it comes from. It is not a flag described by the Statute, which does not provide for one, but it is the coat of arms of Naples exactly as the Statute describes it.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is Neapolitan or has Naples in their blood, for Neapolitan families in Italy and around the world, for the Comune, the Municipalities and their offices, for the city's schools and associations, for neighbourhood festivals and civic anniversaries, for Napoli fans, for a pizzeria, a pastry shop or a shop selling Campanian products, for the tourist who wants to take the coat of arms of Naples home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
