Description

City of Molfetta Flag

White and red, with the arms of the city: the flag of Molfetta

This flag is divided down the middle: white on the left, red on the right. In the centre stands the red shield of the city with a silver band carrying the letters «S P Q M», under a golden city crown, framed by two leafy branches tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour.

The colours of the flag

Araldica Civica gives the blazon of the city's flag as a cloth divided white and red («Drappo partito di bianco e di rosso»), the colours of the field and the band of the arms.

The arms

Italian Wikipedia says the arms and the gonfalone of Molfetta were recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 26 March 1935. The blazon reads: red, with a silver bend charged with the letters S.P.Q.M., with the exterior ornaments of a City. The shield is surrounded by two small branches, oak on the right and laurel on the left, and topped by the mural crown of a city, with eight towers of which five are visible.

S.P.Q.M.

Italian Wikipedia explains that the letters mean Senatus Populusque Melphictiensis, in the manner of the «SPQR» of the arms of Rome, and that they were added to the arms in 1911 (the page marks the date with a question mark) on the order of the municipal administration led by mayor Felice Fiore.

The gonfalone

The gonfalone is a red cloth richly embroidered in gold, carrying the arms with a gold inscription, and the statute of the Comune says that the gonfalone is shown at official ceremonies in the Palazzo civico together with the Italian and European flags.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Molfetta or from Apulia, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
