City of Milan Flag

The coat of arms on a flag: the Milan flag with the crossed shield

This Milan flag carries the city's full coat of arms in the centre of a white field: the white shield with the red cross, topped by a golden turreted crown and framed below by two green branches, laurel and oak, tied with a tricolour ribbon. It is the solemn version of Milan's colours, with the city's full coat of arms.

A coat of arms described word by word

The Statute of the Comune di Milano describes the coat of arms in the old language of heraldry: «argent a cross gules, crested with a turreted crown, a gold circle opened by eight posterns», surrounded by branches of laurel and oak knotted with a tricolour ribbon. The posterns are the small gates in the walls: the crown recalls that Milan is a city. For the flag proper, the same Statute names only the red cross on a white field; this version adds the full coat of arms, with the crown and the branches.

First the flag, then the shield

The red cross was born on a flag. Flag scholars recall a letter of 1155 from the consuls of Milan to the people of Tortona that mentions a white flag with a red cross: the oldest known record of a cross on the flag of an Italian commune. Only later did the cross move from the cloth to the shield, and from there to the civic coat of arms Milan still uses today.

Carved on the city gates

In 1162 Barbarossa destroyed Milan, but a few years later the Milanese came back. A bas-relief from the old Porta Romana, built in 1171 and now in the Castello Sforzesco, tells of that return in 1168, with the cross on the banners. In 1176, at Legnano, the Commune and its allies defeated the imperial army. Since then the red cross has lived through the Visconti, the Sforza and foreign rule without ever leaving the city.

The crown, the laurel and the oak

On Milan's historic gonfalone is Saint Ambrose, the bishop elected by the people, and the gonfalone bears the gold medal of the Resistance. In the coat of arms, instead, the city's turreted crown, the laurel and the oak, and the ribbon in Italy's colours do the talking. Together they make the flag with the coat of arms the choice for the city's important occasions.

Who chooses it

For anyone born in Milan or who made it home, for Milanese living far away, for the Comune, the Municipi and their offices, for the city's schools and associations, for ceremonies and civic anniversaries, for fans of Milan's teams, for a restaurant, a pastry shop or a shop selling Lombard products, for the tourist who wants to take Milan's coat of arms home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
