Description

City of Marsala Flag

Red, with the arms of the city: the flag of Marsala

This flag is a plain red field. In the centre stands a bronze-coloured mural crown over a soft blue shield. On the shield, in Greek letters, is the old name of the city, above the head of Apollo crowned with laurel and his lyre. Branches of olive and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frame the shield.

Apollo and his lyre

The Statute of the Comune describes the arms as a blue shield bearing Apollo with a lyre, topped by a crown, with an inscription on the shield. The statute says the gonfalone is a cloth that reproduces the arms with the words «Città di Marsala».

Granted by decree, shown on red

Italian Wikipedia says the arms and the gonfalone of the City of Marsala were granted by decree of the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi on 20 October 2003, and describes the flag as a rectangular red cloth with the city arms in the centre.

Lilybaeum, Garibaldi and the wine

Marsala is a comune in the free municipal consortium of Trapani, in Sicily, on Cape Boeo. It stands on the area of ancient Lilybaeum, a city of Punic origin, and is known for the landing of Garibaldi and the Thousand on 11 May 1860 and for the wine that carries its name. The Statute also says the city bears the gold medal for civil valour for the bombings of May 1943.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Marsala or with roots in western Sicily, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
