City of Lugo Flag

White, with the arms of the city: the flag of Lugo

This flag is white. In the centre stands a red shield with a silver cross with a small ball at the end of its top and side arms, and, in the upper corner next to the pole, a silver dove holding an olive twig in its beak. A grey mural crown sits above the shield, and a wreath of laurel and oak, tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour, frames it from below. There is no text.

The altar cross and the dove

The official blazon of the arms is «di rosso, alla croce d'argento, ritrinciata e pomata nel capo e ai lati, patente in punta, accantonata alla destra del capo da una colomba dello stesso metallo, volante verso il fianco destro dello scudo, con un ramoscello verde di olivo tenuto nel becco». Italian Wikipedia explains that the arms take up the symbol of the archbishop of Ravenna, on whom Lugo depended, also found on many Byzantine documents and monuments: an altar cross from which the dove of peace takes flight. The arms were in use since ancient times and were officially recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 7 March 1929.

A white cloth

Araldicacivica.it records the gonfalone of Lugo as a white cloth, recognised by a decree of 1 February 1936, and a flag of the same white with the arms of the Comune in the centre. The annex to the Statute describes the gonfalone as a white cloth carrying the arms, topped by the inscription «Città di Lugo».

A city by the Pope's grant

Italian Wikipedia lists the title of Città among the honours of Lugo, a sovereign concession of Pope Pius VII. In September 2022 the town council asked to update the arms and the gonfalone with the ornaments proper to the title of city, and the new emblems were handed to the mayor by the Prefect of Ravenna on 16 December 2023.

The Este fortress

The araldicacivica.it note says the name comes from the Roman fundus Lucus, and that Lugo is first named in a document of Pope Adrian I of 782. In the thirteenth century it passed to the archbishop of Ravenna, who had the first fortification built, later absorbed into the Rocca that still stands. From 1437 it belonged to the Este until 1597, and in 1859 a plebiscite joined it to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Italian Wikipedia adds the eighteenth-century Pavaglione arcade and Francesco Baracca, the First World War flying ace to whom a monument and a museum are dedicated.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Lugo and the Romagna, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of Francesco Baracca, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
