Description

City of Lodi Flag

Red cross on gold: the flag of Lodi

The flag of Lodi is yellow, the colour of gold, crossed by a full red cross that runs to the edges. It is the city's coat of arms carried onto the cloth, with nothing added: red and gold, two warm colours that can be seen from afar.

The city's coat of arms

The Comune's Statute describes it in a single sentence: the coat of arms consists of a red cross on a gold field, with the crown and ornaments of a city. In heraldry gold is rendered as yellow, and there is the flag: the golden field and the red cross, the same as on the shield.

From the ruins of Laus Pompeia

Lodi's story begins with a destruction. The ancient Laus Pompeia, a Roman town, was destroyed by the Milanese in 1111 and again in 1158. The people of Lodi did not give up: on 3 August 1158, by the will of Emperor Frederick I, Barbarossa, a new town rose on the top of the Eghezzone hill, on the right bank of the Adda. It is today's Lodi.

Barbarossa's diploma

The Comune still recalls that birth in its Statute: Lodi bears the title of city, whose foundation was sanctioned by an imperial diploma of Frederick I on 3 December 1158. A precise date, which the city carries with it along with its cross.

Saint Bassianus and the square in celebration

On 19 January Lodi celebrates its patron saint, San Bassiano. The centre fills with stalls, mostly of food, around Piazza della Vittoria, the square piazza surrounded by porticoes on all four sides, overlooked by the Cathedral and the Broletto, seat of the Comune. In the afternoon Piazza Broletto becomes an open-air tavern and the Pro Loco hands out büseca, the traditional tripe. At official ceremonies the Comune carries its gonfalone.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Lodi or has roots in the Bassa, for families who emigrated and Lombard associations around the world, for the Comune, the city's schools and associations, for the feast of San Bassiano and events in the square, for fans of Lodi's teams, for an osteria, a delicatessen or a shop selling Lodi products, for anyone who has discovered Lodi and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
