City of L'Aquila Flag

Green and black with the eagle: the flag of L'Aquila

The flag of L'Aquila is split into two vertical halves, green at the pole and black at the fly, and in the centre it carries the city's coat of arms: a crowned black eagle on a silver shield, with the letters PHS above and the motto IMMOTA MANET at the sides. These are the green-and-black colours the people of L'Aquila recognise anywhere.

An eagle for a name

The city's name and symbol were born together, with its foundation in 1254 by imperial privilege. The Statute of the Comune dell'Aquila describes the coat of arms like this: «argent an eagle with lowered wings sable, crowned, beaked, langued and armed or, with the letters PHS in chief and IMMOTA MANET at the sides». Flag scholars tell that the eagle was originally white on red, and over time became black on silver. Today's coat of arms was recognised by decree on 14 July 1937.

PHS and Immota manet

The motto IMMOTA MANET, «it stands firm», comes from Virgil. The letters PHS have an uncertain meaning: according to one hypothesis they are a misspelling of the monogram of Christ, IHS. A few letters that have accompanied the eagle for centuries and make this coat of arms one of the most recognisable in Abruzzo.

The black of mourning, the green of hope

Green and black are the city's traditional colours. According to tradition L'Aquila chose them after the earthquake of 1703: black for mourning, green for hope. The flag was once divided horizontally, with a black stripe at the bottom and the coat of arms on the green part; the version in use today is divided vertically, in two equal parts, with the coat of arms in the centre.

The four Quarters and the Perdonanza

On the Comune's gonfalone, beside the coat of arms, are the emblems of the four historic Quarters, San Marciano, Santa Maria Paganica, San Pietro and Santa Giusta, chosen as the symbol of the city's unity. And every year, between 28 and 29 August, L'Aquila lives the Celestinian Forgiveness, the Perdonanza, born from Pope Celestine V's Bull of 1294 and inscribed in 2019 on UNESCO's intangible heritage list: it is when green and black are seen in every street.

Who chooses it

For anyone from L'Aquila or with roots in the city and its Quarters, for families who emigrated and Abruzzese associations around the world, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for those who live the Perdonanza and the historic processions, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant or a shop selling Abruzzese products, for those who visit L'Aquila and want to take its colours home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
