Description

City of Frattamaggiore Flag

Red, blue and white, with the arms of the city: the flag of Frattamaggiore

This flag is a red field with a blue border. A white lozenge, touching the edges of the red field, holds the arms of the city: a gold shield with three red T-shaped crosses above a black boar, framed by a border of small squares, with a crest above and two gold branches of laurel and oak below. Over the arms, in an arc, the words «CITTÀ DI FRATTAMAGGIORE».

The flag in the sources

Italian Wikipedia quotes the flag of the Comune as composed of an outer frame in presidential blue, four crimson triangles and a central white rhombus with the inscription «Città di Frattamaggiore» and the boar with the three tau. Araldica Civica gives the blazon: a red cloth with a blue border, charged with a white lozenge touching the edges, carrying at the centre the arms of the Comune under the name of the city.

The arms

The statute says the Comune has as its distinctive sign the arms recognised by Royal Decree of 5 June 1902. Araldica Civica gives the blazon as a gold shield with a boar passing on a grassy ground charged with small shrubs (the «fratte»), with three red tau in chief; above it a circle of wall with eight towers and a crest. According to the explanation quoted by Italian Wikipedia, the three tau, crosses of Saint Anthony, recall the Greek origin of the place and the three colonies whose refugees founded the city: Misenum, Cumae and Atella.

A name from the brambles

Italian Wikipedia explains that the name Fratta comes from Benedictine monastic usage and indicated an uncultivated land of scrub, in Latin «fracta». In the mid-13th century a small group of Atellan refugees settled about two kilometres away, founding the village that became Frattaminore, so that the older settlement was called Fracta Major. The first official document with the new name is a diploma of 1310 by Charles of Anjou.

A city since 1902

Italian Wikipedia says Frattamaggiore has held the title of city since 1902. The gonfalone of the Comune is a blue cloth richly embroidered in gold.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Frattamaggiore or from the Naples area, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
