City of Bergano Flag

Gold and red: the flag of Bergamo

The flag of Bergamo is divided into two vertical halves: gold next to the pole, red at the fly. No figure, no writing, only the two colours that the people of Bergamo have recognised for centuries. It is a simple flag, and that is exactly why it can be seen from afar, on the walls of the Upper Town as on a balcony in the lower town.

The colours of the coat of arms

Bergamo's coat of arms is «party per pale gold and red»: a shield divided in half, yellow on one side and red on the other. The city's statute says it clearly: the city uses a flag that carries the shape and colours of its coat of arms, with the gold at the pole. The flag, in short, is the coat of arms opening to the wind.

A vermilion and yellow cloth

Bergamo's colours are old. A medieval chronicle recalls a Bergamo standard of zendado, a light silk cloth, vermilion with yellow borders: the colours of Bergamo. It was the age of the free commune, which ended amid the struggles between factions, the lordship of the Visconti and, from 1427, the long rule of Venice.

City of the Thousand

Bergamo proudly bears the title «city of the Thousand», which its statute recalls as recognition of its Garibaldian tradition. The city's gonfalone, decorated with a gold medal, was recognised by decree of the President of the Republic of 20 January 1960, and is used at official ceremonies.

26 August, Saint Alexander

Bergamo's day is 26 August, the feast of Saint Alexander, the city's patron saint: for the people of Bergamo it is a holiday. It is the right day to hang the yellow and red at the window, next to the Italian tricolour.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Bergamo or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Bergamo associations around the world, for the city council and its offices, for a school, for the feast of Saint Alexander, for fans of Atalanta who also want their city's colours, for a trattoria or a shop selling Bergamo products, for anyone who has visited the Upper Town and wants to take a piece of it home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
