Description

City of Benevento Flag

Yellow, white and red: the flag of Benevento

The flag of Benevento has three vertical stripes, yellow next to the pole, white in the centre and red at the fly. Three simple colours, without figures, that gather in a single cloth the colours of the city's coat of arms.

The coat of arms with the boar

Benevento's coat of arms is quartered red and silver, with a gold chief at the top bearing a boar. Under the shield, a ribbon carries the initials S.P.Q.B., Senatus Populusque Beneventanus, and the motto «Concordes in unum». The gold of the chief and the silver and red of the quarters are exactly the yellow, white and red of the flag.

The flag with the city's colours

The city statute provides that the flag with the city's colours is flown on municipal buildings next to the Italian tricolour on civic occasions, and on the flagpole of Palazzo di Città on the days the city council meets. The statute does not describe the design: the three stripes are the civic flag as it is used and as reference books of civic flags record it.

From Maleventum to Beneventum

A city of Samnium, Benevento was called Maleventum; the Romans renamed it Beneventum after a victory over Pyrrhus. It was the heart of a great Lombard duchy, later a principality, and in the mid-11th century it passed to the Church, which held it for centuries while the rulers of Naples contested it. In 1860 Garibaldi declared it a provincial capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

24 August, Saint Bartholomew

The city's day is 24 August, the feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, patron of the city and the archdiocese, whose relics are kept in the basilica dedicated to him. And fans of Benevento know that yellow and red are also the colours of the team, the yellow chosen in honour of the Strega liqueur.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Benevento or has roots in Samnium, for families who emigrated and Samnite associations around the world, for the city council and its offices, for a school, for the feast of Saint Bartholomew, for fans of Benevento, for a restaurant or a shop selling products of Samnium, for anyone who has visited the Arch of Trajan and Santa Sofia and wants to remember them. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
