Description

City of Arona Flag

White and green, with wings and a star: the flag of Arona

This flag is divided down the middle: white on the left, green on the right. In the centre a pair of lowered wings sits under a six-pointed star, all in counterchanged colours: green on the white half, white on the green half. There is no shield and there are no ornaments.

The flag in the sources

Italian Wikipedia says the Comune has adopted a flag made of a cloth divided white and green, charged at the centre with the civic emblem without the shield and ornaments. This is the flag shown here.

The arms

The Statute of the Comune describes the arms as a shield divided by a vertical line in silver and green, in which a star and two open wings in flight are shown, in opposite colours; the shield is topped by the heraldic emblem of the centres that have risen to the rank of city. Italian Wikipedia gives the blazon: «Partito d'argento e di verde, al volo abbassato sormontato da una stella di sei punte in capo, il tutto sulla partitura dell'uno all'altro», recognised by decree of the Head of Government of 10 August 1928.

Wings from a name

Italian Wikipedia says the wings, in heraldry a «volo», refer to the place name Alona, found in ancient manuscripts. The arms appear on the frontispiece of the Statutes of Arona of 1319, although the drawing is certainly later and shows gold wings and star on a red field.

A city and its gonfalone

In 1838 King Charles Albert gave Arona the title of city. The gonfalone, granted by royal decree of 7 May 1934, is according to the statute a cloth divided white and green, richly embroidered in gold, with the arms and the gold inscription «Città di Arona».

Who chooses it

For anyone from Arona or from Lake Maggiore, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
