Description

City of Altamura Flag

White, with the arms of the city: the flag of Altamura

This flag is a plain white field. In the centre stands a shield quartered in red and white, with the first quarter red, under a golden royal crown. Below the shield a grey scroll carries the motto «FEDERICVS ME REPARAVIT» in black capitals.

A white flag with the arms

Italian Wikipedia says the city's flag is a rectangular white cloth with the city arms at the centre, and that a variant is quartered white and red with the arms at the centre. Araldica Civica adds that both flags are flown on the façade of the town hall.

The arms

According to Italian Wikipedia, the town statute describes the arms as a shield quartered in red and silver, with the first quarter red, topped by a golden royal crown and accompanied by the motto attributed to Frederick II of Swabia. Araldica Civica notes that the arms are those in use «ab antiquo», and that the royal crown was added in 1463 by express concession of King Ferdinand I of Aragon.

Federicus me reparavit

The motto means «Frederick restored me». Italian Wikipedia places it in the story of the medieval city built under Emperor Frederick II: a first urban nucleus is documented in 1231 and the territory was marked out between 1242 and 1243, while the cathedral was begun in 1232. The longer traditional form, «Orlandus me destruxit, Federicus me reparavit», adds that Orlando destroyed it; Wikipedia says that first part belongs to local tradition and does not record a real destruction of the city.

The Lioness of Apulia

Altamura is known as the «Leonessa di Puglia», an epithet tied to the city's resistance in 1799, when the army of the Santa Fede entered it on 10 May and sacked it. Italian Wikipedia notes that the nickname is documented only much later, with one of the first known uses in 1925. The same page recalls the fossil skeleton known as the Altamura Man, found in 1993 in the Lamalunga cave.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Altamura or from the Murge and Apulia, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for the Comune, its offices and civic ceremonies, for schools, associations and clubs, for fans of the city's teams, for a restaurant, a shop or a business that wants to show where it belongs. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
