Description

City of Albenga Flag

Golden yellow and a red cross: the flag of Albenga

The flag of Albenga is a golden yellow field crossed by a red cross running from edge to edge. It looks like the cross of Genoa, but the field is gold instead of white: that alone makes it instantly recognisable along the Riviera di Ponente as the Ingauni flag.

Written in the Statute

The Statute of the Comune says it in one sentence: Albenga raises its own flag and its own civic gonfalone, «both consisting of a golden yellow cloth charged with the red cross, symbol of communal liberties». Flag and gonfalone therefore share the same design, and the red cross on yellow is also the city's coat of arms.

From the Ingauni to the Romans

Albenga has very old roots. It was the town of the Ligures Ingauni, named Albium Ingaunum, and under Rome it became a municipium. Even today, what belongs to Albenga is called «ingauno».

The free Commune and Genoa

From 1098 Albenga set out to become a free commune, and in the twelfth century it had to bind itself to Genoa with a «convenzione». According to flag scholars, the municipal laws of the time already prescribed the yellow flag with the red cross of Saint George, the same as on the coat of arms, which stayed in use until the fifteenth century. In the sixteenth century the town militia carried the Genoese flag, white with the red cross, with the flag of Albenga, yellow with the red cross, in the upper quarter at the hoist.

A cross that speaks of freedom

Today Albenga's gonfalone also bears the Cross for military valour, awarded to the city for the fighters, the blood and the suffering it gave to the cause of Liberty and the Resistance. So the red cross on yellow, born as a sign of the communal liberties of the Middle Ages, accompanies the city in today's ceremonies and anniversaries.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Albenga or with roots in the town and the Ingauna plain, for emigrated families and Ligurians around the world, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for civic anniversaries and town festivals, for sailing and sports clubs, for fans of Albenga's teams, for a restaurant, a farm or a shop selling products of the plain, for the tourist on holiday on the Riviera. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
