Description

City of Alba Flag

White with the red cross: the flag of Alba

The flag of Alba is a white field crossed by a red cross running from edge to edge. A simple, ancient design, with the same colours as the city's coat of arms: the capital of the Langhe recognises itself in this cross.

The coat of arms of four letters

The Statute of the City of Alba describes the coat of arms as the one «historically used since time immemorial»: a red cross on a white field with the Roman letters A, L, B, A forming the city's name, topped by a count's crown and surrounded by a branch of oak and one of laurel. The flag keeps only the essentials: the white and the red cross, without letters and without crown.

Angel, Lion, Ox, Eagle

On the Comune's gonfalone, according to the text published by the Comune and quoted by flag scholars, are the symbols of the four evangelists, whose initials form the name ALBA: the Angel of Matthew, the Lion of Mark, the Ox of Luke and the Eagle of John. Beside them is a Latin couplet that asks why Alba bears a red cross, and answers with blood shed and with loyalty. The same text describes the municipal flag as a white cloth with a red cross.

A gold medal city

By decree of the President of the Republic of 12 October 1949 Alba was awarded the gold medal for military valour. The citation, reported in the Statute, recalls that the city, centre of the Langhe, lived through the partisan struggle and governed itself in freedom for a month before being attacked by overwhelming forces. Flag scholars recall that short partisan republic, from 10 October to 2 November 1944, and another Republic of Alba, proclaimed on 26 April 1796.

Truffles and the Palio degli Asini

Every autumn, from October to December, Alba hosts the International Alba White Truffle Fair, with its folklore and the Palio degli Asini, the donkey race. These are the weeks when the city fills with visitors from all over the world and the white and red appear in the streets, on balconies and in front of the shops.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Alba or with roots in Alba and the Langhe, for those who live far away and carry their town with them, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for those who race or cheer at the Palio degli Asini, for partisan associations and civic anniversaries, for fans of Alba's teams, for a restaurant, a wine bar or a shop selling truffles and Langhe products, for visitors to the Fair. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
