Description

Chechen Republic of Ichkeria Flag

Green, white and red: the flag of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

The flag of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria is a large green field with, in its lower part, three thin stripes, white, red and white, closed by a last green band. It is the flag of a state proclaimed in 1991 and no longer in existence: a historical flag, tied to a precise decade in the history of the Caucasus.

The Chechen people

The Chechens are a mountain people of the North Caucasus, Muslim by faith, speaking a language of the Nakh group, like the Ingush. Their land stretches between the peaks of the Greater Caucasus, the valleys of the Terek and Sunzha rivers and the steppes to the north, with its capital at Grozny. Ichkeria is another name by which Chechnya is known.

Its birth, in November 1991

In the years at the end of the Soviet Union, in November 1990, the Chechens adopted a first national flag with red, white and red stripes. In the autumn of 1991 the Republic was proclaimed and, in November of that year, Chechnya unilaterally declared its independence from Russia. On 1 November 1991 the green flag with the stripes corrected to white, red and white was adopted, and it came into use on 9 November together with the Republic's arms.

Three colours, one tradition

According to Sayyed Hasan Musa Khadjiev, author of a book on the symbols of the Chechen state, green, white and red bring together all the colours the Chechens had used before, as a sign of continuity between generations. For him white is peace, which had long been missing in the North Caucasus. One of the deputies who discussed the flag in 1991 recalled that the idea of adding a crescent and star was rejected.

The wolf and the nine stars

From October 1992 the flag could also carry an emblem: a wolf and the moon, with nine stars. The wolf is a symbol dear to the Chechens, describing their character; in one explanation, the nine stars recall the nine clans, the tukhums, from which the Chechen people descends. Alongside the version with the emblem the plain one, without emblem, like this one, was also used. From late 1999 Russian forces regained control of Chechnya, which today is a republic of the Russian Federation, with another flag, adopted in 2004.

Who chooses it

For anyone with Chechen roots living in Italy or Europe, for those who study the history of the Caucasus and the former Soviet Union, for a museum, an exhibition or a historical re-enactment, for a school or a model UN and for a collector of historical flags of states that no longer exist. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
