Description

Carinthia Flag

Yellow, red and white, with the arms of Carinthia: the flag of Kärnten

This flag has three horizontal stripes of equal height: yellow at the top, red in the middle, white at the bottom. In the centre stands the state's coat of arms: a shield split in two, with three black lions one above the other on gold on the left, and a white bar on red on the right.

What the state law says

The Carinthian constitution says that the colours of the state are yellow, red and white, and that the state flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width in yellow, red and white, the top stripe being the yellow one. The state symbols law repeats it. The law describes the flag by its stripes; this version carries the arms on top, as German Wikipedia notes the small arms also appear on the state flag.

The arms

The constitution describes the arms as a shield split gold and red: in front, three black lions with red tongues and weapons, one above the other, and behind, a silver bar. A crowned tournament helmet with two gold buffalo horns normally goes above the shield; it is not shown on the flag.

An old claim

German Wikipedia says the arms took this form only after the Babenberg dynasty died out in 1246, and began as arms of pretension (a claim to the Babenberg inheritance). It shows the three lions of the Mödling side line of the Babenbergs together with the Austrian Bindenschild.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Carinthia, Klagenfurt or Villach, or with roots there, for those who live far away and carry their state with them, for lake-side businesses, clubs and schools, and for lovers of Austria. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
