Cape Verde Flag

Ten stars on the sea: the flag of Cape Verde

The flag of Cape Verde is a blue field crossed by three thin stripes, white, red and white, with a circle of ten yellow five-pointed stars. A flag of sea and sky for a country made of islands in the middle of the Atlantic.

The blue of the sea and the sky

According to the explanation given by the Embassy of Cape Verde in the United States, the large blue field is the infinite space of the sea and the sky. The stripes are the road to building the country: white is the peace the people wish for, red is their effort, their everyday striving.

Ten islands in a circle

The ten stars are the ten islands of the archipelago. They stand in a circle to express the unity of the nation and its people, and that circle, the embassy adds, is also the horizon, the world open to those who set out, the compass and the helm of seafarers. A flag that speaks to a people of the sea.

The first flag, in 1975

Cape Verde became independent from Portugal on 5 July 1975. Its first flag came from that of the PAIGC, the party that had led the struggle for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde: the pan-African colours red, yellow and green with a black star. That is why, until 1992, the flags of the two countries looked very much alike.

The flag of 1992

After free elections in 1991, in September 1992 Cape Verde chose a flag of its own, designed by Pedro Gregório Lopes. The country's name means «Green Cape», yet there is no green in it: in an archipelago with little green, where the sea, if well used, gives what is needed, the designer preferred blue. The Constitution describes every detail of it, down to the position of the circle of stars.

Who chooses it

For anyone with Cape Verdean roots living in Italy or elsewhere in Europe, for community associations and their celebrations, for 5 July, Independence Day, for fans of the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations, for those who have travelled there, for a school or a multicultural event, for a collector. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
