Description

Bern Flag

The climbing bear: the flag of the Canton of Bern

The flag of the Canton of Bern has a red field crossed diagonally by a broad band of gold. On the band walks a black bear, with red claws and tongue, climbing toward the pole. It is one of the best-loved flags in Switzerland, and one look is enough to know it: red, gold and the bear of Bern.

Arms written into law

The canton's coat of arms is set by an ordinance of the Bernese government of 9 November 2016: on red a golden bend, on which walks a black bear with red claws and tongue. The flag carries the same design: the red, the golden bend and the striding bear.

The bear that named the city

The city of Bern was founded by Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen, who completed its foundation in 1191. According to legend, the duke killed a large bear in the forest near the new town and named the town after the animal. Ever since, the bear has been the symbol of Bern: the oldest known depiction of the arms is on a city seal of 1224.

From white to red and gold

It is told that the city's first flag was white, with the bear already in its diagonal position. After the battle of the Schosshalde in 1289, the flag is said to have become red and gold as it is today, and by tradition the red recalls the blood of those who died defending the old banner. What is certain is that today's arms are already described in a song composed shortly after 1375.

Bern in the Confederation

Bern has been one of the states of the Confederation since 1353, and since 1848 the city of Bern has been the federal capital. It is a bilingual canton, with German and French as official languages, and it acts as a bridge between French- and German-speaking Switzerland. On the 1st of August, among bonfires and lanterns, the Bernese bear flies beside the Swiss cross from the towns to the valleys.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Bern, German- or French-speaking, and for those who left Bern, for a commune, a school, a shooting club or a choir, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August national day, for fans of Bernese teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a mountain hut or a shop of Bernese products, for those who travel and hike in the canton. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
