Description

Berlin Flag

Red, white and red, with the bear: the flag of Berlin

This flag has three horizontal stripes: red at the top, a wide white stripe in the middle, red at the bottom. In the white stripe walks a black bear on its hind legs, facing the pole, with red claws and a red tongue.

The flag

English Wikipedia describes it as a red-white-red tricolour with an emblem, the two outer stripes each a fifth of the flag's height, and says the civil flag of West Berlin was adopted on 26 May 1954, with the proportions 3:5. German Wikipedia says the flag has been used by the city and later the state since 1911, and first flew over the Red Town Hall in 1913.

The bear

German Wikipedia says the bear is Berlin's heraldic animal and that the bear first appears in a seal of 1280, which hung on a charter of the Berlin furriers' guild. How, when and why the people of Berlin chose it can no longer be reconstructed, as no written records exist. The bear on the arms is a black bear walking upright, with red claws and tongue, on a silver shield.

Red and white from the Mark

German Wikipedia says red and white are the colours of the Mark Brandenburg, kept even though the bear had to prevail over the Brandenburg eagle for several centuries before it became the only emblem.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Berlin or with roots in the capital, for those who live far away and carry their city with them, for football supporters, clubs, schools, bars, shops and businesses, and for friends of Berlin.
