Description

Bear Brotherhood Flag

Seven stripes and a paw print: the Bear Brotherhood flag

Seven horizontal stripes of equal height, from the top: dark brown, orange, golden yellow, tan, white, grey and black. A large black paw print sits in the upper left corner, over the first four stripes.

The colours of bear fur

According to Wikipedia, the International Bear Brotherhood Flag, also called the bear flag or bear pride flag, represents the bear subculture within the LGBTQIA+ community. Its colours symbolise the furs of different species of bears around the world: dark brown, orange/rust, golden yellow, tan, white, grey and black. They are not necessarily meant to refer to human skin or hair colour, and the flag was designed with inclusion in mind.

Craig Byrnes, 1995

Wikipedia reports that the first recorded flag of the bear community was made in 1992 by the Front Range Bears, a social club in Denver. The most widely adopted version was created in 1995 in Washington, D.C. by Craig Byrnes, a founding member of the Chesapeake Bay Bears, as part of a senior project for his psychology degree at Mary Baldwin College. With Paul Witzkoske, who turned the design into a graphic, and Bob Nicholson, who sewed the first four templates, he put four machine-sewn prototype flags of 3 by 5 feet to a vote at the club's «Bears of Summer» event in July 1995.

A tartan too

In 2015 an International Bear Pride tartan, based on the colours of the flag, was registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
