Description

Banner Queen Elizabeth II Flag

The crowned «E»: Queen Elizabeth II's personal flag

This is Queen Elizabeth II's personal flag: a blue field with, in the centre, the initial «E» in gold beneath the royal crown, all enclosed in a chaplet of golden roses. No lions, no harps, no crosses: just the Queen's letter, her crown and her roses.

Born in 1960

The Queen adopted this flag in 1960. It was to be flown on any building, ship, car or aircraft in which she was staying or travelling. The design is in gold, or yellow, on a blue field, and the original flag has a fringe of the same colour.

Not the Royal Standard

It is often confused with the Royal Standard, but they are two different flags. The Standard represents the Sovereign and the United Kingdom together; this flag instead was personal, belonged to her alone and could be flown by no one else.

The Commonwealth flag

Over time its use changed. Although not a «Head of the Commonwealth» flag, it became in effect the Queen's personal Commonwealth flag: it flew to mark her presence in Commonwealth countries without a monarch, and in realms that had not adopted a personal flag specifically for her. Some realms created their own versions, joining their arms to the Queen's design, and in the United Kingdom it was flown on a number of Commonwealth occasions.

Seventy years of reign

Elizabeth II became Queen on 6 February 1952 and reigned until her death on 8 September 2022 at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland. In 2015 she had become the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Her crowned «E» remains tied to that long reign, and for many it is still the simplest way to remember her.

Who chooses it

For collectors of British royal memorabilia and admirers of the Queen, for British communities and associations linked to the Commonwealth, for an English pub or themed venue, for language schools, museums and exhibitions, for theatre and film sets, for a party or an evening dedicated to the Queen. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
