Guinea- Bissau Flag

Red, yellow and green with the black star: the flag of Guinea-Bissau

The flag of Guinea-Bissau has a vertical red band along the hoist, with a black five-pointed star in its centre, and two horizontal bands, yellow above and green below. The 1984 Constitution, in Article 22, describes it just like this: three rectangular bands, the red one vertical and marked with the black star, the yellow and green ones horizontal.

The pan-African colours

Red, yellow and green are the pan-African colours, the same as those of Guinea and Ghana, the already independent neighbours that in the early 1960s were discussing a federation of West Africa. The black star, the star of Africa, comes from the flag of Ghana: the colours of Guinea-Bissau's flag tell of a belonging that goes beyond the country's borders.

Born in the struggle for independence

The design was born in 1961 as the flag of the PAIGC, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, which fought to free both colonies from Portuguese rule. The party flag also carried the initials PAIGC, removed when independence was proclaimed on 24 September 1973. Portugal recognised the new state and its flag only after its own revolution of 1974.

What the star, the yellow and the green mean

According to the official reading reported by Encyclopaedia Britannica, the black star represents the African people and their determination to live in dignity, freedom and peace. Yellow is the harvest and the fruit of work, green the great forests and the farmland that give a living to most of the population. On the map, the red band with the star also matches the western coast with the capital Bissau, while the yellow and green recall the savannas of the north and the forests of the south.

A flag that stayed true

Cape Verde, born of the same struggle, changed its flag over time; Guinea-Bissau kept the original design. The national motto, written in the coat of arms, is «Unidade, Luta, Progresso»: unity, struggle, progress. The flag flies on 24 September, the anniversary of independence, and in the stadium with the national team.

Who chooses it

For people with roots in Guinea-Bissau living in Italy or in Europe, for Bissau-Guinean associations and communities, for national team fans at the Africa Cup of Nations, for schools and multicultural festivals, for those who study Portuguese-speaking Africa, for a restaurant or shop, for collectors of world flags and for model UN delegates.
