Republic of the Congo Flag

Green, yellow and red on the diagonal: the flag of the Congo

The flag of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo with its capital Brazzaville, is divided by a diagonal yellow band: a green triangle on the hoist side, a red triangle on the far side. Three pan-African colours arranged in a way that no other flag in the world shares.

Born in 1959

The Middle Congo, a French colony, became an autonomous republic on 28 November 1958. On 18 August 1959 the Legislative Assembly debated the flag to be flown beside the French Tricolour and chose the pan-African colours, red, yellow and green, in that distinctive diagonal. On 15 August 1960, with independence, the flag stayed the same.

The meaning of the colours

At the time two of the three colours were given a meaning: green for agriculture and the forests, yellow for the friendship and nobility of the people. Red, curiously, was left unexplained. These are the pan-African colours, which Ghana had taken from Ethiopia, the African country that had defended its independence.

Taken away and found again

On 30 December 1969 a new constitution renamed the country the People's Republic of the Congo and brought in a different flag. In 1991 the National Conference decided to return to the original symbols: on 10 June 1991 the green, yellow and red diagonal flew again, together with the anthem «La Congolaise».

In the Constitution and in the anthem

The 2015 Constitution, in Article 3, describes it like this: a tricolour flag, green, yellow and red, made of two triangles, green and red, separated by a diagonal yellow band, with the green on the hoist side. And the national anthem closes with a line that recalls it: in the smallest village people sing «under our three colours».

Who chooses it

For anyone with Congolese roots living in Italy or elsewhere in Europe, for community associations and their celebrations, for 15 August, Independence Day, for fans of the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations, for a school or a multicultural event, for a model UN, for a collector or for anyone who has travelled along the great river. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
