Description

Municipality of Udine Flag

Black and white: the Udine flag

The Udine flag is divided vertically into two halves: black at the hoist, white at the fly. Two clean colours, no figures, the same as the city's coat of arms and gonfalone. It is the flag the Statute of the Comune describes word for word, and one that the people of Udine recognise at a glance.

Written in the Statute

Article 3 of Udine's Statute is dedicated to the coat of arms, the gonfalone and the flag. Of the flag it says a few precise words: a cloth divided vertically black and white, with the black towards the pole. It is the city's official flag, the one the Comune chose to set down in its founding charter.

A black chevron on a silver field

Udine's coat of arms is silver, with a black chevron, the inverted V shape that Italian heraldry also calls «capriolo». Above the shield is the ducal crown and, as a crest, a silver horse rising and facing forward. Beneath the shield are tied the gold medal for military valour for the Resistance in Friuli and the war cross, between a branch of oak and one of laurel.

The black and white gonfalone

The gonfalone repeats the two colours too: a cloth divided black and white, embroidered in gold, with the coat of arms in the centre and the words «Città di Udine» in black and white. The cords and fringes are white on one side and black on the other, and the tip of the pole shows the city's coat of arms once more.

Capital of historic Friuli

This is how Udine presents itself in its Statute: capital of historic Friuli. The city was founded by the Patriarch of Aquileia Berthold of Merania, was soon settled by Tuscan merchants and had communal institutions. From 1420 to 1797 it lived under the Republic of Venice; in 1448, on Piazza della Libertà, the Loggia del Lionello was built, the Gothic town hall. In the First World War it was the seat of the supreme command of the Italian army.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Udine or has roots in Friuli, for families who emigrated and Friulian associations around the world, for the Comune, schools and the university, for the city's festivals and events, for fans of Udinese, for an osteria, a winery or a shop selling Friulian products, for anyone who has visited the city and wants to take a memory home. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
