City of Parma Flag

A blue cross on gold: the Parma flag

The flag of Parma is yellow, crossed by a blue cross running from edge to edge. These are the gold and azure of the city's coat of arms, the crossed colours the people of Parma recognise at first glance, on the Comune's gonfalone as in the stands.

The coat of arms and the gonfalone

The Statute of the Comune di Parma describes the coat of arms as a shield with an azure cross on a gold field, topped by a ducal crown and surrounded by the Latin motto «Hostis turbetur quia Parmam Virgo tuetur», that is «Let enemies tremble, for the Virgin protects Parma». The gonfalone is a cloth with the azure cross on a gold field and the words «Aurea Parma». The flag keeps the heart of it all: the cross and the two colours.

A cross seven centuries old

The azure cross on gold already appears in documents from the first half of the 14th century, but it is older. In 1329 a local chronicle describes the gonfaloni «of the Comune and of the People» bearing the cross «in the usual way». The cross probably took hold in the second half of the 13th century as the symbol of the People and of the Society of the Crusaders, at the origin of the city's popular government. That they are also the colours of the Farnese, the dukes who arrived centuries later, is pure coincidence.

The little bull and Saint Hilary

Beside the cross, Parma long had another symbol: a little bull on a red field. According to tradition it was chosen in honour of the podestà Torello de Strada, who in 1221 had the Town Hall built, and it became the sign of civic freedom. On a seal of 1471 Saint Hilary, patron of the city, holds the crossed banner: the same cross that flies today.

13 January and the city's festivities

On 13 January Parma celebrates Saint Hilary. It is the day the Comune awards the Sant'Ilario prize and the civic honours to citizens who have given something to the city, and when Mass is celebrated in the oratory of Sant'Ilario, under the arcades of the Ospedale Vecchio. Yellow and blue return every time Parma comes together, at the stadium as on anniversaries.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Parma or with roots in the city and its province, for emigrated families who want a piece of home, for the Comune and its offices, for schools, for those celebrating Sant'Ilario, for fans of Parma, for a cheese dairy, a ham maker, a delicatessen or a restaurant of Parma cooking, for the tourist who wants a memory of the city.
