Description

City of Asti Flag

Red with the white cross: the flag of Asti

The flag of Asti is red, crossed by a large white cross running from edge to edge. These are the colours of Asti, the same as its coat of arms, and anyone who grew up in the shadow of its towers recognises them at first sight.

The silver cross on red

The city statute describes Asti's coat of arms as a shield with a silver cross on a red field, topped by a count's crown and accompanied by two palm branches tied in red. The gonfalone also carries a silver cross on a red velvet cloth, with the words «Città di Asti» in gold. The flag takes up this design without crown or writing: the cross, the red, and nothing else.

The motto of Saint Secondo

The coat of arms carries the motto «Aste nitet mundo sancto custode Secundo»: Asti shines in the world under the protection of Saint Secondo, the city's patron saint. His feast falls on the first Tuesday of May, and it is the occasion to fly the city's colours.

A free commune, a city of towers and bankers

An ancient Roman municipium, then a county, Asti obtained comital authority in 1094, and in 1159 Frederick Barbarossa recognised its autonomy as a commune. In the Middle Ages its bankers were among the most influential and its towers rose above the city. The silver coins minted by the commune, the astigiani, already bore a cross. From 1538 the city passed to the House of Savoy.

The Palio, the first Sunday of September

The moment the people of Asti wait for all year is the Palio: in 1275 it was already a custom, and still today the rioni and borghi of the city and the towns of the province compete in Piazza Alfieri on the first Sunday of September. The winner takes home the crimson cloth bearing the city's insignia, after a procession of about twelve hundred people in medieval costume.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Asti or has roots there, for families who emigrated and Asti associations around the world, for the city council and its offices, for a school, for the rioni and borghi of the Palio and their committees, for the feast of Saint Secondo, for a winery, a wine bar or a shop selling Monferrato products, for fans of Asti's teams, for anyone who has seen the Palio run and wants to remember it. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
