Sudan Flag

Red, white and black with the green triangle: the flag of Sudan

The flag of Sudan has three horizontal bands, red, white and black, and a green triangle that starts at the hoist and points towards the centre. They are the four pan-Arab colours, the same as many flags of the Arab world, but in Sudan each of them also tells a page of the country's history.

The colours of the Mahdi

At the end of the nineteenth century the religious leader Muhammad Ahmad, known as al-Mahdi, drove the Egyptians and the British out of Sudan and founded a state of his own. His military flags were black, red and green. After the end of Mahdist rule, from 1899 Sudan was governed jointly by Britain and Egypt, and their two flags flew over the buildings, side by side.

The first flag, blue, yellow and green

On 1 January 1956, independence day, the Egyptian and British flags were lowered and in their place rose the first flag of Sudan: three horizontal bands, blue for the Nile, yellow for the desert and green for agriculture.

The flag of 1970

In 1969 an Arab nationalist government was proclaimed, and the new flag was officially raised for the first time on 20 May 1970. It takes up the colours of the Arab Revolt flag and of the Arab Liberation Flag, and it was designed by Abd al-Rahman Ahmad al-Jali. It has remained the same ever since.

Four colours, four stories

In Sudan the colours of the flag are read like this. Black recalls al-Mahdi and the very name of the country, because in Arabic «sudan» means «black». White recalls the flag of the 1924 revolt, that of the White Flag League, and speaks of peace and optimism. Red is the colour of the martyrs of the struggle for independence. Green is prosperity and Islam, the religion of most Sudanese.

Who chooses it

For anyone with Sudanese roots living in Italy or Europe, for Sudanese associations and communities, for a fan of the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations, for a lover of the history of the Nile and Nubia, for a school or a multicultural festival, for a flag collector or a model UN. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
