Canary Flag

White, blue and yellow: the flag of the Canary Islands

The flag of the Canary Islands has three vertical bands: white next to the pole, then blue, then yellow. In the version you see here, the centre of the blue band carries the archipelago's coat of arms, with the seven silver islands, the royal crown and two dogs at the sides. These are the colours of a Spanish archipelago off the coast of Africa, which for many Italians is the sunshine of winter.

Born at a village festival

According to the researcher José Manuel Erbez, quoted by the Flags of the World archive, the flag was born on 7 September 1961, on the eve of the feast of the Virgen del Pino, patron saint of Gran Canaria. A family of activists, María del Carmen Sarmiento and her sons Arturo and Jesús, made some thousands of small paper flags and handed them out at the festival in Teror. The people, Erbez tells us, at once recognised these colours as the colours of the Canaries.

Two provinces in three colours

According to the same account, the three colours joined the maritime flags of the archipelago's two provinces: white and blue for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, blue and yellow for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The order has a geographical meaning too: the western province of Santa Cruz on the left, the eastern province of Las Palmas on the right.

Seven islands and two dogs

The coat of arms of the Canary Islands is described in the Statute of Autonomy: on a blue field seven silver islands, arranged two, two, two and one at the base. Above, a closed royal crown and a silver ribbon with the motto «Océano»; at the sides, as supporters, two dogs. The Canarian Government's corporate identity manual shows the flag in two versions, with the coat of arms and without.

From the 1982 Statute to today

With the Statute of Autonomy of 10 August 1982 the white, blue and yellow flag became the flag of the Autonomous Community. The new Statute of 2018 describes it again in Article 7: three vertical bands, from the pole white, blue and yellow. The same article sets the institutional feast day of the Autonomous Community on 30 May.

Who chooses it

For Canarians and anyone with family in the Canary Islands, for Italians who live in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote or Fuerteventura or spend the winter there, for an association or a club of friends of the islands, for a restaurant or bar serving Canarian flavours, for a surf or sailing club, for a collector of regional flags. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
