Zurich Flag

White and blue on the diagonal: the Zurich flag

The flag of the Canton of Zurich is divided by a diagonal: blue below, on the pole side, white above. No figure, just two colours cut on the slant. It is the Zurich flag, one of the most recognisable in Switzerland, and the same for the city and the canton.

City and canton, one coat of arms

Zurich's coat of arms is a shield «of silver and blue», that is white and blue, divided diagonally. The City Archives say it plainly: the city and the Canton of Zurich bear the same arms. And they set a rule that applies to every Zurich flag: since a flag is seen from both sides, the blue must always be on the pole side.

From the seal of 1384

The Zurich shield first appears on a seal of the imperial court of justice from 1384. The two colours first appear on a banner of 1437, later carried in the Old Zurich War. On old stained-glass windows the two colours are often held by two lions, the heraldic animals of the city, and the State seal still shows the patron saints Felix and Regula with their servant Exuperantius.

First among the cantons since 1351

In 1351 Zurich made a pact with the forest cantons, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, and with Lucerne, and so joined the Confederation. From that pact to the Federal Constitution of 1999, Zurich always comes first in the list of cantons. From the sixteenth to the eighteenth century it was also the leading canton of the Confederation.

A flag for Zurich's feasts

Zurich has its traditional feasts, such as the Sechseläuten, and the white and blue fly on the 1st of August, the Swiss national day, when streets, squares and balconies fill with flags and lanterns, from Lake Zurich to the Oberland.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Zurich and for those who moved away, for Zurich families in Italy and around the world and Swiss associations abroad, for a commune or a school, for the balcony on the 1st of August and for the Sechseläuten, for fans of Zurich teams, for a restaurant, a hotel or a shop in the city, for walkers in the hills around the lake. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
