Zug Flag

White with a blue band: the Zug flag

The flag of the Canton of Zug is white, crossed in the middle by a horizontal blue band. White, blue, white: three bands and nothing else. It is the Zug flag, the flag of a small canton in central Switzerland gathered around its lake, between the Zugerberg and the Ägeri valley.

A coat of arms inherited from the town

The canton's coat of arms comes from that of the town of Zug: it is the canton that inherited it from the town. To tell them apart, since about 1910 the town's arms have carried a crown in the shape of yellow walls. And there is another difference few people notice: the blue band of the cantonal arms is a clearly darker blue than the town's.

Where the colours come from

No document says for certain where the white and blue come from. They are thought to derive from the arms of Zug's last lords, the Dukes of Austria, who bore a silver band on a red field: the Zug band may once have been red too. The historian Paul Diebolder believed instead that the colours of Zug, Zurich and Lucerne come from the white and blue banner of the Counts of Lenzburg. The oldest known seal of Zug dates from 1319.

1352: from the Habsburgs to the Confederation

In the fourteenth century Zug was a Habsburg town. In 1352 the conflict between Zurich and the Dukes of Austria led to the siege of the town, and Zug had to ally itself with Zurich and the cantons of central Switzerland, with the Habsburgs' rights still reserved. Only from 1415 was Zug fully free, subject only to the emperor. For centuries the canton was a delicate balance between the town and the rural communities of Ägeri, Menzingen and Baar.

A flag you recognise from afar

Simple and bright, the Zug flag can be recognised from afar. On the 1st of August, the Swiss national day, it flies next to the white cross, when streets, squares and balconies fill with flags and lanterns, on the shores of the lake as in the villages of the Zug hills.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Zug and for those who moved away, for Zug families in Italy and around the world and Swiss associations abroad, for a commune or a school, for the balcony on the 1st of August, for fans of Zug teams, for a restaurant or a hotel on the lake, for walkers on the Zugerberg. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
