Walser Flag

White, red and stars: the flag of the Walser

The flag of the Walser is divided in half vertically, white at the hoist and red at the fly, and carries a circle of twelve five-pointed stars in counterchanged colours: red on white, white on red. It is the flag of a mountain people who have lived around Monte Rosa for eight centuries.

Who the Walser are

The Walser are German-speaking populations living in some Alpine valleys south and east of Monte Rosa: Gressoney-La-Trinité, Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Issime in the Lys valley, Macugnaga in the Anzasca valley, Alagna, Rima and Rimella in the Valsesia. In all likelihood they came from the Upper Valais and, from the first half of the thirteenth century, spread in scattered pockets from Savoy to Tyrol. Their language and their distinctive architecture have survived to this day.

The white and red of the Valais

The colours recall the land of origin. White and red are those of the Swiss canton of Valais, from which the Walser set out, and they appear throughout Walser symbolism as a sign of the bond with their roots. According to the tradition reported by vexillologists, the white and red also recall the martyrs of the Theban Legion, who according to the legend were put to death at Agaunum, today's Saint-Maurice, in the Valais.

Ten or twelve stars

Several versions of the Walser flag exist. The one described by vexillologists has ten stars, one for each Walser community: nine in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley and one, Bosco Gurin, in the canton of Ticino. On 25 August 2007 in Rimella, during a Walser gathering, the Piedmont Region had the first Walser flag of Piedmont handed over, white and red with twelve stars, to be distributed afterwards to the other Walser municipalities. This is a flag with twelve stars.

The Walser today

Today the Walser number a few thousand: for centuries they lived from farming and livestock, and today tourism is an important resource for them. The communities meet at the Walsertreffen, the great Walser gathering: in 2007 it was held in Alagna. The communities of the Aosta Valley also use their own emblem, created around 1970, with a large white and red heart.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is Walser or has roots in Gressoney, Issime, Alagna, Macugnaga, Formazza or Rimella, for the associations and Pro Loco of the Walser valleys, for gatherings and village festivals, for a mountain hut, hotel or chalet, for emigrant families, for museums, schools and enthusiasts of Alpine minorities. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
