Vaud Flag

White, green and a golden motto: the Vaud flag

The flag of the Canton of Vaud is divided into two horizontal bands, white at the top and green at the bottom. On the white, in gold letters on three lines, is the motto «Liberté et Patrie», freedom and fatherland. It is the only one of the twenty-six Swiss cantonal flags that carries a motto, and once you have seen it you will always recognise it.

Written in the Constitution

The Vaud flag comes from the coat of arms, and the arms are written into the Canton's Constitution, in article 2: a white and green shield with the motto «Liberté et Patrie», the words in gold letters edged in black, white above and green below. While the new Constitution, in force since 2003, was being drafted, one member of the constituent assembly proposed changing the motto to «Liberté et Solidarité»: the great majority of the people of Vaud said they were against it, and the motto stayed the same as ever.

The green of the 1798 revolution

For almost three centuries, from 1536 to 1798, the Pays de Vaud was a subject territory of Bern. On the night of 24 January 1798 a group of patriots proclaimed the Lemanic Republic in Lausanne and Vevey, and that day an all-green flag was flying on the place de la Palud in Lausanne. Green was the colour of the French revolutionaries of the Bastille, recommended to the Vaudois by La Harpe: the colour of hope and of William Tell.

April 1803: the flag is born

With the Act of Mediation of 1803 Vaud became a canton of the Confederation. One of the very first decisions of the new government, in April of that year, was to define the flag. The first design, green and white, showed William Tell's hat above a sword, but the Grand Council rejected it and chose today's flag. In place of the word «Égalité», which had stood next to «Liberté» on the revolutionary flag, came «Patrie», already written on the green and white flag of the corps of miners of Bex.

From the Jura to the lake

Vaud stretches from the Jura to the Prealps and touches the shores of three lakes: Lake Geneva, with La Côte and Lavaux, Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Morat. Its capital is Lausanne. On the 1st of August, the Swiss national day, the white and green fly next to the Swiss cross, when streets, squares and balconies fill with flags and lanterns.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Vaud and for those who moved away, for Vaud families in Italy and around the world and Swiss associations abroad, for a commune or a school, for the balcony on the 1st of August, for fans of Vaud teams, for a winery in Lavaux or La Côte, a restaurant or a lakeside hotel, for a mountain hut in the Vaud Prealps. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
