Vendée Flag

The red and white heart: the flag of the Vendée

The flag of the Vendée is divided in half vertically, red at the hoist and white at the fly, and in the centre it carries its best-known symbol: a double heart topped by a cross, drawn in counterchanged colours, white on red and red on white. It is the Vendée heart, and in France one look is enough to know which land it speaks of.

The Sacred Heart of the insurgents

The heart comes from the French Revolution. During the Vendée insurrection, between 1793 and 1796, the insurgents used the Sacred Heart, a red heart topped with a red cross, and their leaders wore it on the chest, on a woollen badge. The insurgents' army, the «Whites», marched behind a white flag strewn with fleurs-de-lis, often with the words «Vive Louis XVII».

The Wars of the Vendée

The Wars of the Vendée were a series of insurrections in the west of France. The general uprising began with the conscription of February 1793, and the army, called the «Catholic Army», later took the name «Catholic and Royal Army». After the great battles of 1793 resistance went on on a smaller scale, and it ended in 1796 with the capture and execution of the leaders Stofflet and Charette.

From coat of arms to logo

The Sacred Heart entered the coat of arms of the department of the Vendée, registered on 20 October 1943. On 15 January 1980 the General Council adopted a logo designed by the Carré Noir agency, with the double heart as a stylisation of the Sacred Heart; the design was later renewed, and the new logo was adopted on 18 September 1989. It is the one seen on the flag.

The flag today

The red and white flag with the heart is very popular and is still used today by the Departmental Council, in this version without words and in one with the words «Vendée Le Département». It has also been seen flying on the sailing boats racing in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe. It is therefore the flag of a present-day French department, more than a historic flag.

Who chooses it

For anyone from the Vendée or with roots there, for Vendée associations in France and around the world, for enthusiasts of the history of the French Revolution and re-enactment groups, for sailors, yacht clubs and followers of the Vendée Globe, for towns twinned with the Vendée, for schools, museums and theatre sets. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
