Soviet Union Flag

Hammer, sickle and star: the flag of the Soviet Union

The flag of the Soviet Union, the flag of the USSR, is a red field with, in the upper corner near the pole, a crossed hammer and sickle in gold and above them a red five-pointed star bordered in gold. It is the state flag of the Union, the one that flew on the Kremlin: it should not be confused with the military flags or with the Victory Banner.

From the red flag

In the first days of the Russian Revolution of 1917 the red banner was enough for the Bolsheviks. A plain red cloth had first been used as a symbol of popular rights during the French Revolution, and in the nineteenth century it had become the flag of socialist movements all over Europe: in 1871 it was also the official flag of the Paris Commune.

From 1918 to 1924

On 14 April 1918 the new Russian Socialist Federated Soviet Republic adopted the red flag with the initials of the state in gold in the upper corner. At the end of 1922 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was born, and its Constitution fixed the design of the national flag. With hammer, sickle and star, and with minor changes over time, that flag remained in force from 1924 until the end of the Union.

The symbols

Each element had its meaning: the hammer stood for the workers, the sickle for the peasants, and the star for the ultimate goal of the global victory of communism. The red of the flag was a bright, vivid shade, which Soviet laws carefully distinguished from a darker red used only on a few other flags.

The end of the Union

On 25 December 1991 the Soviet flag was lowered over the Kremlin in Moscow and replaced by the Russian flag, and at the end of that month the Soviet Union was formally dissolved. Since then the red flag with hammer and sickle has belonged to the history of the twentieth century, and it is found in museums, collections, films and historical re-enactments.

Who chooses it

For collectors of historic flags and enthusiasts of twentieth-century history, the Cold War and the space race, for Second World War re-enactment groups, for museums, schools and exhibitions, for theatre and film sets, for a history-themed venue. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
