Description

Solothurn Flag

Red above, white below: the Solothurn flag

The flag of the Canton of Solothurn is divided into two horizontal bands: red at the top, white at the bottom. Just two colours, no figures, carried by the people of Solothurn for more than six centuries. It is the flag of a town on the Aare and of a canton that stretches along the Jura hills, from Solothurn to Olten.

The colours of Saint Ursus

Behind the red and white stands a saint. Solothurn has always venerated the martyrs Ursus and Victor, and traces of a Christian community go back as far as the fifth century. According to tradition, Ursus was a soldier of the Theban Legion, the Christian legionaries killed for their faith, and he was martyred right here, on the bridge over the Aare. The town seal has always shown Saint Ursus, and as early as 1394 its background was red and white like today's flag: that is why these colours are considered the colours of Saint Ursus.

From Roman Salodurum to a city-state

Solothurn is very old. The Romans founded it as a guard post and bridgehead on the Aare, and called it Salodurum. In the Middle Ages the town built up its own territory step by step, from 1344 onwards, through inheritance, purchases and alliances, until it became a small city republic.

1481: Solothurn joins the Confederation

After the wars against Charles the Bold, the confederates were divided between city cantons and rural cantons. The tensions ended only in 1481 with the Covenant of Stans, and with Solothurn and Fribourg entering the Confederation together. Since then the red and white have belonged to the family of Swiss cantons.

The town of the ambassadors

For more than two and a half centuries, from 1530 to 1792, the ambassadors of the King of France lived in Solothurn, and for a long time weighed on the choices of its Councils. Today the cathedral of Saint Ursus rises over the town, and on the 1st of August, the Swiss national day, the red and white fly next to the Swiss cross, when streets, squares and balconies fill with flags and lanterns.

Who chooses it

For anyone from Solothurn or Olten and for those who moved away, for Solothurn families in Italy and around the world and Swiss associations abroad, for a commune, a parish or a school, for the balcony on the 1st of August, for fans of Solothurn teams, for a restaurant, a hotel or a shop in the old town, for walkers on the Jura. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
