Pirates Edward england - Black Flag

Skull and crossbones: Edward England's pirate flag

The pirate flag you see here is the Jolly Roger par excellence: a black field with a white skull above two crossed bones. It is the design that tradition links to the pirate Edward England, one of the first to raise the version of the Jolly Roger that everyone recognises at first glance today.

Who Edward England was

Edward England was an Irish pirate of the so-called «golden age» of piracy, the period running from the late seventeenth to the early eighteenth century. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, he was among the first, together with the British pirate Richard Worley, to adopt between 1717 and 1720 the black flag with the white skull and crossbones.

From plain black to the skull

Before these personal flags, pirates often raised an all-black flag, which announced the attack but promised to spare those who surrendered at once; if the crew resisted, the red flag appeared, a sign that no mercy would be shown. Many pirates approached their prey under a national flag, to deceive them, and raised the Jolly Roger only at the last moment.

A symbol from far away

The origin of the skull and bones on pirate flags is not clear. Barbary pirates are thought to have added a skull to their green flags as early as the sixteenth century, and the log of a French ship from 1687 describes a red flag with a skull and crossbones. Many historians regard the French pirate Emanuel Wynn, around 1700, as the first pirate to fly a skull and bones, though together with an hourglass.

Everyone's Jolly Roger

According to the Royal Museums Greenwich, the white skull on black became common in the 1720s, when piracy was already in decline, and it was used by famous pirates such as Black Sam Bellamy, Henry Every and Calico Jack. From there it passed into novels, into «Treasure Island» and «Peter Pan», and onto the flags of many sports teams.

Who chooses it

For anyone who loves pirates and sea stories, for children and themed parties, for re-enactment groups and pirate festivals, for a sailing boat or a yacht club, for a pub, a beach bar or a themed venue, for theatre and film sets, for sports supporters, for collectors. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
