Obwalden Flag

Red, white and a key: the flag of the Canton of Obwalden

The flag of the Canton of Obwalden is divided horizontally, red above and white below, and across the two halves it carries an upright key in counterchanged colours: white on the red, red on the white. The key has its bit at the top, turned towards the pole.

The key of 1291

The single-bitted key comes from the old seal of the land, the very seal with which the oldest Federal Charter, that of 1291, was sealed, and then the charters that followed. That seal had been made around 1240 for the lower valley, Nidwalden; with the addition «et vallis superioris», «and of the upper valley», it became the seal of all Unterwalden. Today it is kept in the State Archives of Obwalden, in Sarnen.

The red and white of Unterwalden

For centuries Obwalden carried into battle a plain banner divided red and white, which was also the common banner of Unterwalden. In 1512 the banner given by Pope Julius II to the Confederates of Unterwalden went to Obwalden. The key, the attribute of Saint Peter, was added later: Saint Peter is also the patron of the church of Sarnen, Obwalden's mother church.

From Sarnen town hall to the canton's arms

In Obwalden's coat of arms the key appears for the first time on the overdoor of the main entrance of Sarnen town hall, built in 1729–1731: the key was added to the old red and white field. Then that form disappeared again, and only almost a hundred years later, in 1816, was the red and white field with the key declared the official coat of arms of the canton.

The land of Saint Nicholas

Obwalden is one of the four Forest Cantons around Lake Lucerne, with Sarnen as its capital. It is also the land of Saint Nicholas of Flüe, Bruder Klaus, the hermit of the Ranft above Sachseln, who died in 1487 and was proclaimed a saint by Pope Pius XII on 15 May 1947, venerated by the Swiss as patron and messenger of peace. Every year thousands of pilgrims come to his places; and on the 1st of August the red and white key flies next to the Swiss cross.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Obwalden or has roots there, for those who live far from Sarnen and take their key with them, for a commune, a school, a shooting club or a corporation, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August and village feasts, for the pilgrims of the Ranft, for fans of Obwalden teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a mountain hut or a shop selling local products, for the tourists and hikers visiting Obwalden. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
