Nidwalden Flag

The silver double key: the flag of the Canton of Nidwalden

The flag of the Canton of Nidwalden is red, with in the centre an upright white key, with two bits turned outwards and a single bow. Nidwalden's coat of arms in fact shows a silver double key on a red field: in heraldry silver is shown as white, and that is why the key is white.

The key of Saint Peter

The key comes from a seal, that of the parishioners of Stans, and the key is the attribute of Saint Peter, patron of the church of Stans. That seal appears for the first time in 1291, hanging from the Federal Charter of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden; with the addition «et vallis superioris», «and of the upper valley», it became the common seal of all Unterwalden, and for centuries it hung from every charter of the Confederation.

From one key to two

In the fourteenth century Nidwalden and Obwalden began to go their own ways. Nidwalden wanted a seal of its own, and as early as 1363 it used one showing Saint Peter and a single key. A Nidwalden flag from before 1400 still shows the single key; the flags of the fifteenth century carry the double key instead, most likely chosen to stand apart from Obwalden. And the all-red field, instead of Unterwalden's red and white, served the same purpose.

The gift of Pope Julius II

In 1512 Pope Julius II, to thank the Confederates for the founding of the papal Swiss Guard and for driving the French out of Pavia, gave the cantons the banners known as the Julius banners. Unterwalden's went to Obwalden, and Nidwalden sent the Landammann Bartholomäus Stulz to Rome to ask for a banner of its own with the double key, which is also in the popes' coat of arms. The Pope agreed, and also approved a legend: it was said that in 388 the people of Nidwalden had rushed to the aid of Pope Anastasius I in Rome and received the double key as a reward. A legend indeed, embroidered in silver thread on the banner.

Stans and its feasts

Stans is the capital of the canton; its town hall keeps a Nidwalden banner from about 1601, given by the Landammann Johannes Waser. Since 1865 Stans has also had its Winkelried monument. On the 1st of August the double key flies in the villages between Lake Lucerne and the mountains, next to the Swiss cross.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Nidwalden or has roots there, for those who live far from Stans and take their key with them, for a commune, a school, a shooting club or a corporation, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August and village feasts, for fans of Nidwalden teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a mountain hut or a shop selling local products, for the tourists and hikers visiting Lake Lucerne. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
