Lucerne Flag

White above, blue below: the flag of the Canton of Lucerne

The flag of the Canton of Lucerne is among the simplest in Switzerland: two horizontal stripes, white above and blue below. No figures, no words, just two colours that have meant Lucerne for more than six hundred years. One rule to remember: the blue always goes at the bottom.

A flag and a coat of arms that differ

Lucerne's coat of arms and flag are not the same. The cantonal Constitution describes the coat of arms as divided, one half blue and the other white, that is, split vertically; the flag instead is divided horizontally, white above and blue below. Lucerne is, with Ticino, one of the two cantons whose arms and flag differ in this way, and that is why whoever raises it must make sure the blue field is at the bottom.

Where the white and the blue come from

The origin of the colours has no certain answer, but several explanations. Blue and white were the colours of the knights of Hinwil-Eschenbach and the knights of Littau, important in Lucerne in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries; blue is also the colour of the Virgin Mary, always greatly venerated in the city. Then there is a more poetic theory, by the Lucerne heraldist Joseph M. Galliker: the white would be the eternal snow on the horizon, the blue the water of Lake Lucerne.

From the flag to the coat of arms

At first the flag showed the two colours divided horizontally, white above and blue below; the vertically divided coat of arms took hold at the end of the fourteenth century with the seal of the magistrate Petermann von Gundolingen, who from 1361 joined Lucerne's white and blue with the red bar of the Habsburgs. After the battle of Sempach the red bar disappeared, but the vertical division of the coat of arms remained.

A canton since 1332

Lucerne has been a canton of the Confederation since 1332, the year of the alliance with the three Forest Cantons, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, which would decide its future. Today the white and blue fly over the lake on the 1st of August and colour the city at carnival, when at five in the morning of Fat Thursday the Urknall opens the Lucerne Fasnacht with parades and Guggenmusik.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Lucerne or has roots there, for those who live far from Lake Lucerne and take its colours with them, for a commune, a school, a club or a Guggenmusik band, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August and for the Fasnacht, for fans of Lucerne teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a lake boat or a shop selling local products, for the tourists and hikers who have discovered Lucerne and its lake. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
