Description

Yugoslavia Flag

Blue, white, red and the star: the flag of Yugoslavia

The flag of Yugoslavia you see here has three horizontal stripes, blue, white and red, and in the centre a large red five-pointed star edged in gold, touching all three stripes. It is the flag of socialist Yugoslavia, unchanged from 1946 until the break-up of the country at the start of the 1990s.

The colours of the South Slavs

Why blue, white and red? According to Flags of the World, the blue-white-red combination was chosen after the First World War for the new state of the South Slavs because it was the only arrangement of these three colours, correct by the rules of heraldry, not yet in use: red-white-blue had long been the Croatian flag.

Three Yugoslavias

The name Yugoslavia, «land of the South Slavs», was borne by three different states. The first was the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, proclaimed in 1929 and ended by the Second World War. The second was socialist Yugoslavia, born in 1946, a federation of six republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. The third, from 1992, joined only Serbia and Montenegro.

The star of 1946

The red star appeared on the tricolour during the war, from 1941. The version with the yellow-edged star was adopted on 31 January 1946, the same day as the new Constitution, and never changed again. As early as September 1941, at a partisan meeting in Stolice, it had been decided to place the red star in the centre of the units' tricolours.

The end of the federation

In 1963 the country took the name Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but the flag stayed the same. It was abandoned between 1991 and 1992, as the federation split apart: Serbia and Montenegro used it until 1992, and the republics that formed it are today independent states, each with its own flag.

Who chooses it

For anyone who loves the history of the Balkans and of the twentieth century, for collectors of historical flags, for people born in or with family in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, for cultural associations, for a school or a museum, for theatre and film sets, for a Balkan-themed venue or restaurant. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
