Russian Empire Flag

The tricolour with the eagle: the Russian Empire flag of 1914

The flag of the Russian Empire you see here is the white, blue and red tricolour with, in the upper corner next to the pole, a golden yellow square bearing the black double-headed eagle of the tsars. It is a flag born at the start of the First World War and in use for only a few years, until the end of the monarchy in 1917.

Peter the Great's tricolour

It all begins with Peter the Great, who wanted a modern Russia and a fleet. He studied shipbuilding in the Netherlands, and between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century he chose for merchant ships a flag that, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, echoed the Dutch red, white and blue tricolour, with the stripes in a different order: white, blue and red. That tricolour became hugely popular.

The black, gold and white of the tsars

In the nineteenth century the tsars tried to impose another tricolour on land, black, orange-gold and white, the colours of the imperial arms. It had no success: Russians kept preferring the white, blue and red, and in 1883, before his coronation, Alexander III restored it as the state flag.

The yellow square of 1914

Just after the beginning of the First World War the tricolour was modified by adding a golden yellow square with the imperial arms: according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, a symbol of union between the ruling dynasty and the Russian people. The vexillologist Whitney Smith links it to an imperial decree of November 1914; Russian sources speak instead of a ministerial circular that introduced it for private use, alongside the state flag.

The end with the revolution

The flag with the eagle disappeared in 1917, when the monarchy was abolished. The plain tricolour remained for a while the country's de facto flag, then came the red flags of the Soviet era. The white, blue and red became the flag of Russia again in 1991.

Who chooses it

For anyone who loves Russian history and the history of the Great War, for collectors of historical flags, for re-enactment groups, for a school or a museum, for theatre and film sets, for people with Russian roots, for a cultural association, a restaurant or a venue inspired by the Russia of the tsars. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
