Grisons Flag

Three leagues in one flag: the flag of the Canton of Grisons

The flag of the Canton of Grisons tells three stories on a single cloth. At the top towards the pole, a field divided black and white; at the top on the other side, a quartering of blue and gold with a cross in counterchanged colours; below, on a white field, a black ibex rearing up. They are the arms of the three leagues from which the canton was born.

The ibex of the League of God's House

The ibex is the emblem of the League of God's House. A first image is found in Chur cathedral in 1252; as a heraldic animal it appears for the first time on a document of 1291 and then on the seals of the bishops of Chur. The League of God's House, founded in 1367, brought together the cathedral chapter, the ministerials, the town of Chur and the communes, and made the bishops' ibex its own.

The black and white of the Grey League

The black and white field is the coat of arms of the Grey League, also called the Upper League, born in 1395 in the Surselva as an alliance to keep the peace and renewed in 1424. Its first coats of arms, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, were different; over time the shield divided grey, later black, and white prevailed: the very league that gave the canton its name, Grisons.

The gold and blue cross of the Ten Jurisdictions

The quartering of blue and gold is the coat of arms of the League of the Ten Jurisdictions, born in 1436 after the Counts of Toggenburg died out. Its first seal, from 1518, showed a white cross; the colours gold and blue already appear on a heraldic stained-glass panel of 1548. In 1524, with the League Charter, the three leagues gave themselves a common constitution: the Free State of the Three Leagues was born, an ally of the Confederation, which in 1803 became a Swiss canton.

Since 1932, a single coat of arms

From 1803 the official coat of arms of Grisons consisted of the three shields of the leagues. On 8 November 1932 the cantonal government set today's coat of arms, which the Federal Council approved in February 1933: three coats of arms joined into one. It is also the flag of a canton with three official languages, German, Romansh and Italian.
