Glarus Flag

A saint on the move: the flag of the Canton of Glarus

The flag of the Canton of Glarus is the only cantonal flag with a saint. On a red field walks Saint Fridolin, dressed in black, with a golden halo, a pilgrim's staff in one hand and the Bible in the other. He moves towards the pole and turns his face to the viewer: a simple figure, recognised at first sight.

Who Fridolin was

According to tradition, Fridolin was a missionary from far away, founder of the convent of Säckingen on the Rhine, to which the lands of Glarus belonged for centuries. His presence in the valley is not documented, but it is around him that the people of Glarus built their identity: as early as the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the idea spread that the land belonged to Saint Fridolin. Legend has it that the saint even brought the wealthy Ursus back from the grave to bear witness to the gift of the lands.

The flag of Näfels

On 9 April 1388, at Näfels, the people of Glarus defeated a far larger Habsburg army. After Näfels Fridolin's flag became above all the symbol of the ties between the land and the convent of Säckingen. The oldest surviving Glarus flag, in embroidered silk, dates from the end of the fourteenth century and is kept in the Museum of the Land of Glarus, in Näfels. Glarus had allied itself with the Confederates in 1352 and joined the Confederation for good as a canton around 1388.

Today's Fridolin

Over the centuries the saint has been drawn in a thousand ways: with or without a hat, with a pilgrim's bag, even with a crozier instead of a staff. The figure you see today, stylised and easy to read even from afar, is the one drawn by the graphic artist Ernst Keller and adopted by the cantonal government in 1959: black habit, white face and hands, halo, staff and Bible in gold on a red field.

The feasts of the Glarus flag

On the first Thursday of April, except when it falls in Holy Week, the Näfelser Fahrt remembers the victory of 1388 with a procession led by bearers of crosses and flags. On the first Sunday of May, in Glarus, the Landsgemeinde meets, the open-air assembly of the citizens entitled to vote and the supreme body of the canton. And on the 1st of August Fridolin flies next to the Swiss cross.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from Glarus or has roots in the Glarnerland, for those who live far from the Linth valley and take their saint with them, for a commune, a school or a club, for Swiss associations abroad, for the Landsgemeinde, the Näfelser Fahrt and the 1st of August, for fans of Glarus teams, for a hotel, a restaurant, a mountain hut or a shop selling local products, for hikers on the Klausen and Pragel passes. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
