Jura Flag

The red crozier and the seven stripes: the flag of the Canton of Jura

The flag of the Canton of Jura is divided into two halves. Towards the pole, on a white field, a red bishop's crozier with its crook turned towards the pole; in the other half, seven horizontal stripes, four red and three white. Few figures, only two colours: the Jura flag can be recognised from afar, even among dozens of cantonal flags.

The crozier of the prince-bishops of Basel

The crozier recalls the former Bishopric of Basel. For centuries, starting with the gift of Moutier-Grandval to the bishop of Basel in 999, these valleys belonged to the prince-bishopric: Porrentruy, Delémont, the Franches-Montagnes, Saint-Ursanne. Red and white are the colours of that long history, which ended with the French Revolution and the French period between 1792 and 1815.

Seven stripes for seven districts

The seven stripes stand for the seven districts of the historical Jura: Porrentruy, Delémont, Franches-Montagnes, Moutier, Courtelary, La Neuveville and Laufen. The flag was created in 1947 by the heraldic artist Paul Bœsch, at the request of the tourist and cultural association Pro Jura. On 12 September 1951 the Bernese government recognised it and authorised its use alongside the Swiss and Bernese flags, when the Jura was still part of the Canton of Bern.

The youngest of the cantons

The Congress of Vienna had assigned the Jura to the Canton of Bern. On 23 June 1974 the people of the Jura voted to create a canton of their own; on 24 September 1978 the Swiss people and all the cantons approved, and on 1 January 1979 the Republic and Canton of Jura became the twenty-sixth canton of Switzerland, with Delémont as its capital and French as its official language. Its Constitution describes the coat of arms in article 5: per pale, argent a crozier gules, and gules three bars argent.

A flag for celebrations

The red crozier and the stripes fly everywhere in Delémont during the Fête du peuple jurassien, held every September since 1948. And they return to the balconies on the 1st of August, next to the Swiss cross, in the villages of Ajoie and the Franches-Montagnes.

Who chooses it

For anyone who is from the Jura or has roots there, for those who moved away to work and take their canton with them, for a commune, a school or a shooting club, for Swiss associations abroad, for the 1st of August and the Fête du peuple jurassien in Delémont, for fans of Jura teams, for a hotel, a restaurant or a shop selling Jura products, for hikers walking between Porrentruy, Delémont and the Franches-Montagnes. We sew it to order, in the size and fabric you choose above, and you see the delivery date before you pay.
